"Hey little girl, we have to go to a party tonight, okay?" She jumped up and down in excitement. Her father embraced her, but she pulled away and grinned.
"Yeah!" She stopped, her face falling. "Wait, are we going to Timothy's house?"
"Yes, but you have to wear a dress, okay?" She pouted.
"I hate dresses." He gave her a sympathetic look.
"I know sweetheart, but this is a party, you have to look like a princess for Timothy, right?" He winked.
"I hate princesses. All they do is spend time on a giant chair and do nothing but look pretty." She paused. "And I don't want to wear a dress for Timothy. He won't care anyway." Her father smiled knowingly.
"Well, I'll agree with you on the princesses part, but you still need to wear a dress. Don't argue. Just go get dressed. It's yellow too, your favorite color, so don't complain." She rolled her eyes and stomped in. A few minutes later, she walked back out in a yellow dress, plain and simple.
"I look terrible Dad..."
"You look fine."
"Nuh-uh!"
"Yes, you do, now let's go, we'll be late."
"Aww..."
"C'mon, let's go." She hopped into the car sluggishly, not wanting to go to the party. She was about nine, but she was pretty childish. She always needed people to take care of her and she didn't really have many friends. Timothy's family was the only family they were close to, and his brother, Chad, was always quiet in the corner. As she pulled up to the familiar driveway, a dark shadow loomed behind them.
A gunshot rang in everyone's ears, and the glass in the back window shattered to pieces.
The first person she looked to was her father. The look on his face was one in between surprise and extreme pain.
"D-Dad?" her voice shook as she realized what happened. "Dad? Talk to me." He looked to her and put a hand on her shoulder.
"Victoria," his voice was calm, but stern, "call the ambulance."
Within the next hour several things occurred. The biggest was her father dying.
"Are you Victoria?" A tall doctor kneeled down to her height. She nodded slowly.
"Dad told me not to talk to strangers..." His look softened.
"I'm his doctor, don't worry. I'm taking care if him." He flipped out an I.D. "Look Victoria, I'm going to talk to you like an adult, okay?" She nodded and shuffled a bit. "Your father is in a better place now. He passed away today, but we found the person responsible. His name is Richard Pendragon, and he has a son about your age. He's going to jail and we'll get back to you when we know the reason behind everything, alright?" She didn't respond. Her shoulders shook and her face was drenched in tears. "I'm sorry for your loss. He was a great man, and father."
"I miss Daddy... He said he would be there for me after Mommy died in a car accident. He promised!" Her shoulders shook even more. "I hate cars! I hate them!"
"Victoria," Chad poked his head around the corner. "Victoria, it's alright. I lost my parents too." He walked over and embraced her. "I'm adopted."
"I'll only ride in Chad's cars, then." She hugged him tight. "Chad's my older brother now."

She woke up, breathing hard. Tears drenched her pillow and overflowed in her eyes. Her vision was blurry, but she could just make out the three on the clock.
She flipped out her phone and dialed his number.
"Hello?" Chad's groggy voice sounded on the other line.
"Chad?"
"Oh, hey sis. You alright?"
"I... I had the dream again. I think it's because of the party tomorrow. I thought I could do it, but..."
"It's alright sis, I'll be there. I can pick you up if you want, I'll tell Alex."
"No, it's okay, really... It's just a car, right? I have to get over that fear at some point."
"Yeah, but maybe now isn't the time?"
"No, it is. I'm sure of it."
"Okay, but if you change your mind, I need a date too." She chuckled. Her mind relaxed a bit.
"Okay, see you tomorrow, Chad."
"See you. Go back to sleep, okay?"
"I will. Bye big brother."
"Bye little sis."
